Leland Community Church strives to provide tangible opportunities to be God’s hands and feet in Leelanau County, our state, country, and world. God has given each of us special talents, passions, and resources to help others. Many in our congregation are involved in a variety of community activities that help others. Members strive to serve and show God’s love beyond our church doors. If you’re interested in using your skills and passion to help those within the larger Leland community, contact us and start serving today!

Where does the food go? We prepare 80-90 meals a week. On Mondays, we serve dinners to a predominantly homeless population in Traverse City at 5 pm from our base at DHS Park. On Fridays, meals go to individual families in Leelanau County.
How do you find people in need of meals? We are informed of individual families in need by Leelanau school teachers. We also coordinate our food outreach with the Northwest Food Coalition of Traverse City.
5Loaves2Fish is thankful and grateful for those individuals and businesses who have supported our mission through food, time, and monetary donations. Through these donations, we can show God’s love and compassion and be the church. Deuteronomy 15:11: “For the poor will never cease to be in the land; therefore I command you, saying, ‘You shall freely open your hand to your brother, to your needy and poor in your land.”

Art & Soul North
Art & Soul North is a separate outreach ministry under 5Loaves2Fish. It is operated through Central United Methodist Church in Traverse City on Thursdays from 8:30 am – 1:00 pm. The program is designed to bring dignity, pride, and purpose to those who are homeless and marginalized. Through self-expressive and collaborative community art, this program helps to nourish mind, body, and spirit. It is first a ministry of hospitality, offering a place of comfort and encouragement using art as the medium. Expressive art is the focus. Art becomes the vehicle for healing, self-discovery, and transformation.
Art and religion have always gone together. There is a deep and ancient bond between the church and the artisan. Art fosters new ways to see and experience God. Therefore, it is natural for the church to support and encourage the gifts of artistry and creativity throughout its community. Making art is a discipline that requires silence, contemplation, discernment, humility, and mindfulness — all spiritual practices!
Art programs for the homeless, while new to our region, have been successfully established in many cities throughout the country. Examples of incredible works of art created by the homeless are sold through art galleries and art shows from Seattle to New York. These programs have showcased the immense creative potential of the homeless community. For many talented individuals, art provides the opportunity to make a living selling their art, and to be able to afford housing and basic living needs.
